Sahiwal is one of the best indigenous dairy cattle breeds in India known for its milk production, disease resistance, heat tolerance and ability to thrive in harsh climatic conditions. Due to its superiority, the Sahiwal breed has been utilized widely for improvement of local stock or for initial crossbreeding of indigenous stock with European breeds in many warm humid countries and introduced into as many as 17 countries to develop different synthetic strains like Jamica Hope, Australian Milking Zebu (AMZ), Australian Friesian Sahiwal (AFS), Mpwapwa and Pabna crosses etc.

The indiscriminate crossbreeding in India has resulted in dwindling of this breed under field conditions and few hundred animals are found under field conditions along the Indo-Pak border in Ferozepur and Amritsar districts of Punjab and Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan besides some pockets of U.P. and Chhattisgarh. In addition to this some of the Sahiwal animals are maintained at organized farms maintained by government, NGO and Gaushalas. The NDRI Cattle yard, Karnal maintains superior Sahiwal germplasm for more than 60 years and the pedigree, history sheets and performance records of the animals are well maintained at this farm.

This book contains 19 chapters which covers from the sex ratio, body weights and growth rates, milk production traits during first to four lactations, part lactation records, test day records, persistency, reproduction traits, persistency and its genetic and phenotypic estimates, correction factors, extension of lactation records and prediction of lactation milk yield, selection index, lactation curve modeling and genetic evaluation of Sahiwal cows and sires using first and part lactation records.

This book contains the results of most of the research work on Sahiwal cattle conducted by the postgraduate and doctoral students of Dairy Cattle Breeding Division of NDRI, Karnal under the Chairmanship of the first author. The authors duly acknowledge the postgraduate students Dr. J S Mohanty, Dr D S Kannan, Dr Senitula, Dr M Manoj, Dr Monalisa, Dr U T Mundhe and Dr Shoubhana Koushal for undertaking research work on Sahiwal cattle. The authors also express their sincere thanks to the Director, NDRI, Karnal and Officer In-charge, Cattle Yard for giving permission and providing the necessary data for conducting these research works. The authors sincerely hope that this book will act as a useful reference material to the researchers, teachers, students and farmers associated with indigenous cattle.
