Ecological and Societal Diversity in the Epic Padmaavat is an interdisciplinary exploration of Malik Muhammad Jaayasi’s celebrated 16th-century epic through ecological, literary, philosophical, and socio-cultural lenses. Divided into comprehensive thematic sections, the book begins with an overview of Jaayasi’s poetic brilliance and presents a detailed breakdown of the Padmaavat from Khand 1 to Khand 58, chronicling the spiritual, romantic, and heroic journey of its central characters, especially Padmaavatee and Ratn Sen. Each khand encapsulates rich storytelling layered with cultural, emotional, and philosophical reflections. Beyond the literary narrative, the book extends into Vedic microbiology, highlighting ancient wisdom from the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda—particularly in the context of health, maternity, and traditional knowledge. Further, it investigates phytodiversity, with insights into algae, cyanobacteria, fungi, lichens, and various plant groups, addressing Jaayasi’s limitations in botanical references. The volume also delves into Vedic plants, folk medicine, pharmaceutical formulations, and animal biodiversity, drawing connections between ecological awareness and ancient Indian literary traditions. This rich compilation offers readers an in-depth understanding of Padmaavat not just as a poetic epic but as a cultural document encompassing the ecological, medicinal, and spiritual wisdom of its time.
