Dr. Shanker Lal is basically biological scientist. He has been renowned Teacher, Breeder and Research Manager. He has been meritorious student throughout his educational career. He took his graduation in Agriculture from Amar Singh Jat College, Lakhaoti (Buland Shahar) and M.Sc. (Ag) and Ph.D. degrees from Govt. Agricultural College, popularly known as Patthar College ( Now C.S. Azad University of Agriculture and Technology), Kanpur. He served the same college as teacher in Agricultural Botany, Vegetable Breeder and Economic Botanist (Legumes). He served three SAUS (C.S.A.U&T, Kanpur as teacher and researcher; C.C.S.H.A.U., Hisar as Professor of Plant Breeding and Geneticst/Pulses Breeder and N.D.U.A.&T., Faizabad as Director of Research), one deemed to be university (ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi) as Geneticist (Pulses) and Facilitator) and ICAR as Astt. Director General (Crop Sciences)

After retirement, Dr. Lal served U.P. Council of Agricultural Reseach, Lucknow as D.D.G.(RMP) and Govt. of India as National Consultant (Seeds) under National Food Security Mission. He is prolific writer and has published 75 research papers, more than 200 extension articles, 10 Bulletins, 6 manuals and 3 books.

Dr. Lal has made significant contributions in the field of plant breeding by developing 15 varieties of crops and vegetables (6 of chickpea, 2 each of pigeon-pea and field-pea and 1 each of mung-bean, bitter gourd, tomato, sem and chilli). These varieties have become popular not only among Indian farmers, but in Australia and Sri Lanka also. For his contributions, he has been honored by ISPRD Award -1994 Dr. Dharam Pal Singh Life -Time Achievement Award -2015 and International Pulses year 2016 for outstanding contribution in pulses research. He is still active in academic field and is teaching seed production Technology and management to Agri-business Management students in C.S.A.U.&T., Kanpur.
