We are very happy to learn that mushroom production in India has been proved to be a very important activity to ensure food, nutrition and employment security and also in transforming rural economy through generation of income in rural, semi urban as well as urban areas. The global production of mushroom from 60,000 tons in 1978 has reached to about 40 million tons in 2019-2020. Similarly, the production of different mushrooms in India from 6,000 tons in 1975 has been enhanced to 1.80 lakh tons in 2019-2020. There are many states in India which are contributing in production of different mushrooms. India is still dominated by the production of only 4-5 mushroom species viz., Agaricus bisporus, Pleurotus spp., Volvariella volvacea, Calocybe indica and Lentinula edodes. The major production of white button mushroom in India is from Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh which contributes for about 73% of the total mushroom production followed by 16% of oyster mushroom production (Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal), 7% paddy straw mushroom (Odisha, Haryana, Delhi) and 3% milky mushroom production (Tamil Nadu, Uttrakhand). The production could have been enhanced due to the awareness created in popularising the nutritional & medicinal values of mushrooms, the production technology of different mushrooms standardised through AICRPs on Mushroom located in different parts of the country, mass training programmes imparted/demonstrations organised under various programmes, showcasing of mushroom technology and mushroom products in National Mushroom Mela at Solan (H.P.), Kisan Mela, Kisan Gosthi, National Workshops/Seminars, International Conferences etc.
