About Author

The north-east region of India comprising of the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim, is one of the hotspots of freshwater biodiversity in the world. The region is endowed with a bounty of aquatic resources forming 46% of the total water resources in the country.  A total of 479 fishes have been recorded from these aquatic bodies, of which 133 are endemic to north-east India.  The region recorded the highest fish production of 470 thousand tonnes in 2017-18, an increase of more than 148 thousand tonnes from the 2011-12 periods. The region is also rich in ethnic and cultural diversity; the people possess a variety of Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) related to fish and fisheries, with scientific interventions, such knowledge could be effectively utilized for economic augmentation of the society. While many of the aforesaid parameters strongly indicate a congenial environment for growth of fisheries, there are several bottlenecks for fisheries development in the region. The fish production presently is inadequate and there is a huge gap between production and demand for fish. The population of the north-east india quadrupled during the past half century and feeding fish to these burgeoning inhabitants is a challenge where 95% of the people is fish eaters. The over-dependency on the traditional fisheries, lack of proper technological interventions, inadequate and irregular supply of basic inputs (fish seed, supplementary feed, fertilizers etc.), insufficient infrastructure, inadequate extension support and above all, peoples’ hesitation to adopt modern aquaculture practices are still important problems in the fisheries development of the region. Nevertheless, in recent years, the central and state governments have undertaken several initiatives to stimulate regional economy and promote fisheries which have thrown up numerous opportunities for fisheries enhancement in north-east India.

This book provide comprehensive and updated knowledge on fish diversity and fisheries of north-east India, which is very important in students’ learning and implementing research and development programmes effectively by the educational and administrative institutions of this important eco-region. The vast teaching and research experience of the authors have immensely contributed to generate such information. The book will be useful to the students, scientists, researchers, ichthyologists, conservationists, extension specialists, development workers, fishery administrators and all others interested in fisheries aspects of north-east India by fulfilling the intended purpose of serving as an important and valuable reference resource.
