About The Book

Social Casework: The Indian Paradigm and Practice offers a groundbreaking exploration of social work theory and practice through the lens of Indian socio-cultural, spiritual, and philosophical traditions. Divided into five thematic parts, the book begins by outlining the conceptual foundations and Western models of social casework, then transitions into the development of a distinctly Indian framework rooted in indigenous values, societal structures, and cultural sensitivities. It delves into how the principles and process of casework can be effectively reinterpreted within India’s diverse contexts, drawing from Indian philosophy, the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, Buddhist thought, Swadhyaya (self-study), and traditional narratives like Brata Katha. Emphasizing spiritual tools such as yoga, meditation, and Yajña therapy, the book presents an integrative model of healing and empowerment suited for India’s unique realities. Real-world applications are illustrated through case studies and professional experiences across domains like correctional services, schools, and community development, showcasing the relevance of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) such as Panchmahabhootas and Tri-doshas. This book is a vital resource for students, scholars, practitioners, and policy-makers in social work and allied disciplines who seek to bridge global practices with contextually relevant, culturally grounded Indian approaches to social care.
