About The Book

Global production of food has tremendously increased during the last couple of decades due to advancement and continuous improvement in crop production technology. However, plant diseases continue to invade agricultural crops and inflict substantial crop damage in the tune of 15- 25% yield decline. In view of huge yield loss caused by plant diseases. substantial improvement in crop protection technology has also taken place. but it has largely confined to synthetic chemicals. It was presumed that pesticides offer a reliable solution of plant diseases, but realization of adverse effects of chemicals and the development of new pathogenic races, have exposed the limitation of pesticides. Increasing awareness towards residual accumulation in food and subsequent toxic effects on human beings have led to increasing disregard to pesticide-ridden food materials. Under this situation, the need for a sustainable plant protection system, such as a bio-intensive approach consisting of non-chemical means has been realized during the last decade. In fact, by and large, the biointensive approach is age-old method of growing healthy crops, but the existing recurring problems of pests and diseases in agricultural crops has necessitated its exploitation and integration with modern plant protection technology to: enhance its effectiveness. With these objectives, the present book has been compiled presenting disease problems and their management in agricultural crops so as to highlight the effectiveness and application of bio-intensive approaches in plant diseases management. In the present book, important diseases, as well as crops, were identified in view of current national priorities and disease scenario, and experts in the relevant fields were invited to contribute chapters. The present book contains twenty-five chapters which provide comprehensive information on various aspects of the diseases and their management through one or a combination of bio-intensive tools.

We are, in fact, highly thankful to the plant protection fraternity of the country for responding overwhelmingly to our invitation to contribute a chapter. Further, we are grateful to them for preparing the chapter at a short invitation, and also for bearing with us and cooperating in revising the chapters as well as clubbing their proposals in a case of duplication, We greatly appreciate the untiring help rendered by our all students, especially Mr Faheem Ahamad, Mrs Tanveer Fatima Rizvi, Mr Rafeeq

Kasim Abdu Mohammed, Mr Rahul Kumar Sharma, Mr Mohammad Akram, and Mr Irfan Ahmad, and also Dr Rizwan Ali Ansari.
