About Author

Ramie (Boehmeria nivea (L) Gaud) is one of the strongest natural fibres that are commercially important. This vegetable fibre occupies the prime position in respect of strength and its qualities of length, durability, absorbency, fineness and luster make it a very useful fibre for various industrial purposes. Ramie fiber is known especially for its ability to hold shape, reduce wrinkling, and introduce a silky lustre to the fabric appearance. It has certain advantages like its resistance to bacteria, mildew, insects, alkalis, mild acids, rotting and light.

The use of ramie fibre dates back to prehistoric times, at least in China, Indonesia and India. In modern times, leading commercial producers of fibres are China, Japan, Brazil and the Philippines. The fibre is now extensively used for various purposes. The main importing countries are Japan, Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

The book  has been written primarily to help under graduate and post graduate students and research workers in agricultural sciences and the students of botany in general as a reference book for their understanding of the crop and help in their research. A wide range of outline contents and subject matters of this book have also been formulated keeping in mind the needs of entrepreneurs and people working in the ramie sector ranging from farmers to the marketing of ramie products.
