As scrupulous truth and manly narration constitute the essence of good history; the author Alexander Dow has driven the greatest amount of facts in his history of Hindostan from the eastern writers like ferishta's history of hindostan,Abdul Fazil's Akbarname,Shuffia's Miratul Wardit,Matmid Khan's Jehangirnama,Mirza Kasim's Shah Jehanama,Rose Nama,Alamgirnama and Nazir Bukhtiar Khan's Mirat Alam. These men of learning were greatly honoured with the friendship of the emperors at whose courts they lived and therefore they wrote freely what they saw and felt. of course Alexander dow has also taken into account what intelligent European travellers saw and wrote in those days.Persian writers, account of ancient India has been omitted because of their unreliable description of eaarly bharat due to their unfamiliarity with the Sanskrit language of Hindu Brahmins. This chapter has been substituted by a long dissertation concerning the customs, manners, language, religion and philosophy of hindostan based on the writings of the pundits of the country. In concluding third volume from the death of Akbar to the complete settlement of the empire under aurangzeb, the author has dilated on the people of India indicating particularly the origion and nature of despotism. He has also conducted an enquiring into the moghuls and east India company and formulated a plan restoring the province to its former prosperity and splendour which were in existence before the invasion of mahommedans. To throw more light on the affairs of the country there is given at the end of each diffrent reign,a summary review of the rest of Asia and in the appendices the author has collected the form of commission granted by the emperor to his governors.
